Updated E-Cigarette Regulations in Allegheny County
On March 7, 2017, the Allegheny County Council approved the regulation of e-cigarettes in indoor public places, workplaces, and food establishments. These regulations include the following:
- Limit the use of e-cigarettes and vape products by food service workers during work hours.
- Prohibit “vaping” where smoking is prohibited, with the exception of specialty stores making most of their income from the sale of these products
County Executive Rich Fitzgerald issued the following statement in response to the vote: “I am proud that Allegheny County continues to focus on protecting our public health and ensuring that our community is one where quality of life is important. These measures, recommended by the Allegheny County Health Department and passed by the Board of Health, have made a statement that we value our public’s health. I thank Dr. Hacker and the Board of Health for its work on this progressive legislation. It is initiatives like this that attract companies and talent to this region.
In addition, Allegheny County Health Department Director Dr. Karen Hacker commented: “We are pleased to see the County Council vote in favor of the ordinance to eliminate e-cigarettes and vaping from public indoor spaces where smoking in already prohibited. This ordinance puts Allegheny County in the company over 500 jurisdictions that I have already passed similar regulations.
